Thousands of blogs are written on SEO every day and they all scoot around the same ideas of metas, clean URLs, keywords, links, site navigation and regularly updated content. While I am still in the learning process, and will probably never be an expert due to search engines constantly improving and tweaking their algorithms, I feel that every article is saying the same thing, day after day. Today I read an article on Promotion World on “15 unforgettable priceless tips regarding on-page optimization” and I thought I would expand on the list by digging a little deeper on a few of the points.
1. URLs—First, keep it clean. Use hyphens and not any characters that the spiders won’t be able to detect—or they’ll stop reading your pages! This is especially true for each individual product. While the article suggests using your prime targeted keyword, I have to argue that building brand awareness is more valuable. Put your prime targeted keyword as the first phrase in your Page Title.
2. Your Page Title does not need to include your brand name. This is especially important for new websites. Have 5-7 key phrases to help optimize your search results. Additionally, be sure not to repeat page titles. You want each one unique and relevant to the content on the page.
3. Meta Descriptions—Begin with top keyword phrases and ensure that each sentence is dramatically correct. The description must also be enticing as it is what customers read as they are determining on which link to click.
4. Image Optimization—Try to limit the flash on the website if you are new to the industry. This will help optimize the page for the time being. Also, ensure that the text surrounding the image is supportive and relevant. This is important for Google Image searches. Also, don’t forget about Alt Tags! Have descriptive text for EVERY image.
5. Every homepage should have links to deeper pages. I am not referring to the navigation menus, but the main body of text. If you are referring to the products that you offer, be sure that hyperlinks are plentiful to ensure that customers and SE spiders can easily find what you are talking about. And don’t stop at the homepage, put them EVERYWHERE!
